The junta in Burkina Faso has detained the former leader of the ruling party.

Security troops in Burkina Faso have detained the former speaker, only days after he demanded that ousted President Roch Kaboré be released immediately.

Police arrested Alassane Bala Sakandé, who is also the leader of the previous ruling party, at his residence early Sunday morning.

After hours of interrogation in the capital, Ouagadougou, he was freed without charge in the evening, according to local radio Radio Omega.

"He stands reproached for remarks he made during a press conference conducted by his party, the People's Movement for Progress, on March 24," his lawyers said earlier, according to the AFP news agency.

In January, the former president was overthrown and has been under house arrest since.

Ecowas, the West African regional bloc that has threatened Burkina Faso with more sanctions, has demanded his absolute release.
