A call has been made to the Minister of Water and Sanitation, Mrs. Cecilia Abena Dapaah to, immediately impress upon the Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) “expand and open more estuaries so that when the GWCL spills excess water from the Weija Dam it can run into the sea at Tsokome.

The residents of Tetegu who made the call noted that Ghana Water Company Limited last week Friday spilled excess water from the Weija Dam to maintain the integrity of the dam.
According to them the spillage started around 10 a.m. when the water level reached 47.8 feet (ft), exceeding the safe operating level of the dam, which is 47ft.
In the wake of the spillage, they mentioned that the communities which were affected include Tetegu, Oblogo, Pambros Salt, Lower McCarthy Hill, Lower Weija, Bojo Beach, Ada Kope, Tsokome and surrounding communities.
According to the residents, the creation of  about three estuaries at the Bojo beach were not enough to facilitate the movement of the water into the sea hence the annual rituals of the floods disaster that has rocked the people in Tetegu who were in the direct catchment areas of Weija Dam.
"What we are saying was that the only means and ways the government can prevent the annual floods disaster in the wake of Weija dam spillage was to focus on expanding or opening more estuaries at Tsokome," the residents told Soireenews.com in an interview when this reporter visited the Tetegu on Friday October 7,2024 to access the floodings situation.
During the visit, this reporter saw that hundreds of affected residents who have been displaced by the floodings have started returning to their various houses in Tetegu after the floods water was subdued.
Speaking in interview with Soireenews.com, some affected residents have counted their lost and called on the central government to, immediately provide them with the disaster relief items.
According to them, although the officials of National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) came to take inventories about their properties which were destroyed during the Weija Dam spillage, the NADMO was yet to come to their help.
They stated that their clothes were all wet in the water, lamenting that some of them don't have shirts or dresses to wear, and that we wore one dress for the past three days."
They disclosed to this reporter that since they were displaced by the flooding water they were rocked with severe food shortage, lamenting that they are currently living or sleeping in hunger.
"Even foods for us to eat are our problem now, and that we are calling on the government and other corporate institutions to swiftly come our aid to safe us from this pressing problems, the affected residents appealed.
They said "we never seen this flood before since we are staying in this area for the past 20 years ago.
"This year's flood is very severe that we the inhabitants of the area were affected. We have not been informed by the management of the Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) before it spilled the water from the Weija dam," the residents stressed.
"We realized that the rain has fallen for long time, no information from the GWCL and the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) but what we seen was that the GWCL has spilled the excessive water from dam which has caused disaster in our area.
"We are currently living in danger. As is it now we all need an urgent support from the state authorities and the corporate institutions because our properties have been destroyed by the floods," lamented.
Against this background, the residents stated that “We the residents of over five thousand (5000) population in Tetegu are appealing to authorities through Assembly Member Honourable Bright Kwame Adabra, for the construction of drains.
According to them, any time there are heavy downpours, many parts of the Tettegu floods resulting to the loss of properties running to millions of Ghana cedis.
They sent a save of soul messages to state authorities to put up measures to fix flood-prone-Tettegu areas because the situation caused by the flooding waters is gradually escalating.
They stated that the major areas within Tettegu which needs drains are Wassman Rasta Ayalolo School Area, Ghana Flag Tetegu Old Town, Tsidi Kopeme, Maimi, island city and Anwiawia.
They explained that they could not relocate because they had lived there for years and would, therefore, manage with the situation should there be floods.
A resident, Ms Gifty Nartey, said she had lived in the Tetegu community for many years and that although the the spillage was a normal experience.
Naa Ayele, another resident, also said they had no choice but to be there whenever the weirs (gated barricades to control the flow rates of water) were opened.
