Sudan's warring sides trade blame over church attack

The paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), which are located in Omdurman, a city close to the capital Khartoum, have been charged by the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) with attacking churchgoers there.

In a statement released on Sunday, the army said that RSF had violated established protocol and international humanitarian law by firing shots at worshippers inside the Blessed Church in Omdurman.

However, RSF denied attacking the church in a tweet and claimed that a "extremist group" allied with the SAF was responsible.

The group also charged SAF with killings in the capital and "assassinating" Amir Hasaballah, a representative of a football organization.

Earlier, the SAF had demanded that the world community recognize RSF as a "terrorist organization" and accused the group of targeting two hospitals in Khartoum.

Despite a ceasefire reached last week in Saudi Arabia, which calls on the warring parties to allow humanitarian relief and to safeguard civilians, violence persists throughout the nation.
