Stranded migrants rescued in Nigerien desert

According to the UN, 44 West African migrants who were attempting to cross into Libya last week were saved in northern Niger.

According to the International Organization for Migration, they spent two days stuck in the desert after their car broke down.

The 29 men, 12 women, and 3 girls were discovered close to the north-eastern Niger village of Dirkou.

The military in Niger reported in late June that 10 migrants' remains had been discovered close to the Libyan border.

There have been several instances of migrants being left in the desert by smuggling organizations and of people being mistreated in Libyan detention facilities.
