The Sunyani Traditional Council and its dubbed, Sunyani Stakeholders Platform, a stakeholder group that aims at ensuring the development of township is threatening to demolish all properties on waterways within the Traditional Area.

The action is to help bring back to life the traditional streams that have been put to their graves due to improper buildings in the Sunyani area.

According to the group, it was collaborating with the Sunyani Traditional Council to ensure that properties and structures on waterways were demolished to avert flooding during the rainy season.

During an inspection visit by the group together with the Queen Mother for Agozokrom, Nana Akua Dadzawa Agozo and Nifahene of the Sunyani Traditional Area, Nana Kwame Addai Kuntuma who was repping the Council to a number of sources of rivers and streams in the Municipality, it was gathered that many church buildings, structures, and houses had been built at unauthorized places, particularly waterways and the courses of rivers and streams in the Municipality.

“This act of lawlessness which is becoming a canker in the Municipality must be stopped before the unexpected happens during the rainy season and as such, the stakeholders have the full support of the traditional council to take strict actions which will help curb this menace ”,  Nana Kwame Addai Kuntuma stressed.

He noted “It is also unlawful to divert waterways and also construct concrete slabs to block waterways,” he said.

He said the fact that Nananom and the people of Sunyani are tolerating does not permit unlawful people to take their leniency for granted by engaging in acts that will turn to affect the generations yet unborn.

Nana Kuntuma is therefore appealing to the Management of the Sunyani Municipal Assembly to help check the unlawful and destructive activities of residents and estate developers.

Mr. Atta Akoto Senior, the President of the Association also implored the Lands Commission, the Town, and Country Planning Department, and the National Disaster Management Organization to be proactive to avoid any preventable disaster in the Municipality.

However, the Queen Mother for Agozokrom, an area within the Sunyani Traditional Area that is hugely affected by this canker stressed that, even though the Council is considering demolishing these unauthorized structures, culprits will not be spared as the council will see to it that compensations are paid to the council to appease the gods for the damages.
