Somalia questions 20 foreigners ex-Shabab hostages

Twenty foreign people who spent years with the extremist organization al-Shabab are being questioned, according to Somalian officials.

Before being taken hostage by Somali pirates, the guys from Pakistan and Iran claimed to have been employed as fishermen.

The guys from Pakistan and Bangladesh have claimed to local authorities that they were fishermen who were held captive by pirates for eight years before being released by al-Shabab in Harardhere, a town governed by the Somali jihadist group.

What caused their release on Saturday is yet unknown.

The 20 guys traveled to Hobyo, a small coastal town that has long been the epicenter of Somalia's lucrative piracy trade.

Abullahi Ahmed Ali, the district commissioner there, told the BBC that they were being questioned and discussions were taking place with the Mogadishu government.
