A taxi driver has been shot by a suspected soldier of forestry commission guards near a police checkpoint at Asamankese in the Eastern Region in a timber truck chase.

A taxi driver has been shot by a suspected soldier of forestry commission guards near a police checkpoint at Asamankese in the Eastern Region in a timber truck chase.

According to reports, the driver, Nana Yaw George, was driving behind a loaded truck when the soldier shot him in the head around 2 am on the 5th of April 2021.

The shot was fired from the rear windshield (back screen) of the taxi with registration number GR-3847-21.

The residents blocked the principal street of Asamankese and asked that justice prevails. Adding that the action of the military man was illegal and until he is fish out, no one would be allowed to pass by.

Some of them, who witnessed the incident, thronged on the street to protest the killing of their colleague, a relative, and a taxi driver.

Many youths of the Asamankese community, said they cannot understand why the unknown military man will shoot a well-known driver.

The Taxi driver was gunned down few meters from the police checkpoint.

The Asamankese Police Commander, Chief Supt. Joseph Ackah explained that the incident occurred around 2:am Monday when the Military and the Forestry Commission embarked on patrol to fish out indiscriminate persons.

He said his outfit cannot confirm whether the shooting came from the military or not.

He said they have commenced investigations into the matter.
