Residents of Sogakofe have given the police a three-day ultimatum to find and arrest the group of armed robbers who killed the Sogakofe South’s Assembly Member, Marcus Mawutor Azahli. They threatened that, the police’s failure to do so will attract their wrath.

They bemoaned that the police has failed to address the security issues in the municipality in spite of the several distress calls in about six robbery accidents that resulted in the loss of lives and property within the last two years.

Addressing the press, an Opinion leader, Maxwell Lukutor, said the police are always late to show up at crime scenes and usually arrives after the robbers have completed their operation to “shoot indiscriminately”

The residents who staged a protest on Sunday morning and blocked the Sogakofe-Accra highway, following the murder Assembly Member, are promising to take the law into their hands should the police fail to bring the assailants to book. 

Mr Lukuto requested the police to produce the outcome of investigations on the 6 robbery incidents, questioning the competence of police officers stationed in the district.

”The police we have realised are more active in arresting drivers and some selected Okada riders in town for petty cash, rather than responding to our emergency calls to save our lives”, he bemoaned. 

He asserted that residents are terrified following a series of armed robbery incidents and called for an intensified police visibility and patrol to help the curb the increasing spate of crime in the South Tongu District. He called on the relevant institutions to immediately effect a mass transfer of Police officers in the district patrols to this effect.

He hinted at the possible collaboration between the some of the police force and armed robbers in the area.

“The police officers have been in the district for over 20 years...and we think that some of them may be in link with some of these people to be perpetuating these crimes”, he alleged.
