Employees of Chinese Sinohydro Company working on the ongoing Tamale interchange have embarked on an indefinite strike over nonpayment of arrears.

The strike takes effect today, Thursday 18th March 2021.

Speaking in an interview with the workers on-site, they told  SN24 News that the Chinese company owes them a 3-month risk allowance.

The angry Sinohydro workers also complained that the GHS300 tax which is being deducted from their net pay is eating up their salary up.

The workers further complained over the poor condition of service.

These aforementioned challenges of the Sinohydro workers among many others according to them have triggered the strike.

They said all efforts to retrieve the allowances have proven futile.

The furious workers in an interview with this portal on site specified that they will not come back to work on the Tamale interchange if their complaints are not resolved.

It will be recalled that President Akufo-Addo cut the sod in 2019 March for the construction of the Tamale Interchange through a barter arrangement at a cost of US$2 billion including some priority infrastructure projects to be delivered across the country, in exchange for the delivery of Ghanaian manufactured aluminum products to Sinohydro.

As of January 31, this year work on the Tamale interchange was 60 percent complete, with the assurance that it will be completed by July 31, 2021 however the said strike could hamper the progress of the project if the workers’ challenges are not addressed.
