Despite dominating West Africa in the era following the Second World War, Ghanaian highlife has been in recession ever since, constantly being dominated by the Nigerian Afrobeat genre.

The arrival of the Young Accra-based outfit Santrofi has changed all that, returning Ghanaian highlife right to the summit where it belongs.

Their debut album "Alewa" has climbed from the streets of Accra right to the top of the World Music Charts Europe in July 2020. It was previously down two places last month. Since it's release in April, the album has always been on its way up, never suffering a dip in form.

They toured the world last year, smashing through Europe one festival at a time allying precision instrumentation with crisp dance moves. The Alewa album was produced through German label Outhere Records and displays music through the eyes of Santrofi’s modern take on highlife, in the form of Afrobeats and ’70s funk.

This 20 track album is all about a high-octane mix of punchy jazz horns and call-and-response vocals typified by Kwaa Kwaa and Adwuma. There are Afrobeat echoes on Konongo Kaya, but Santrofi’s message is joy rather than defiance.

Starting from Ghana, the band charged through Europe in fine style during the summer of 2019. From Roskilde to Sines and WOMAD. They also stunned their audience at  WOMEX 2019 in Finland.

The band has also featured the mammoths of highlife such as Ebo Taylor, Pat Thomas, Gyedu Blay Ambolley, Osibisa, George Darko but also the young stars of today like  Sarkodie and  2 Face Idibia.
