Sam George has specifically defined that Pope Francis' opinion on the LGBTQ+ cannot be enforced on the Ghanaian community despite his influence as the head of one the largest Christian faith.

The Member of Parliament for Ningo Prampram who is actively pushing for the legalization of the anti-LGBTQ+ bill in Ghana’s parliament told that in spite of mother churches endorsing homosexuality in Europe and America, their decision does not affect its offsprings in Ghana.

Sam George was earlier interviewed by Claire McDonald on BBC on why he is against homosexuality and its legalization in the West Africa country. She then mentioned Pope Francis statement made in support of LGBTQ+ following a General Audience where he had a brief meeting with members of an Italian group Tenda di Gionata (Jonathan’s Tent), which supports the parents of LGBT children to buttress her argument.

"God loves your children as they are," the Pope said in 2020.

"The Pope loves your children as they are because they are children of God," Pope Francis added.

Claire in her interview asked that “Is the Pope wrong then? Pope Francis said last year that same-sex couples should be allowed to be in a civil union, he says homosexual people have the right to be in a family, they are children of God and have a right to be in a family. The head of one of the largest Christian faith in the world, is he wrong then?” she asked.

Hon Sam George was quick to prompt the interviewer that Pope Francis view does not represent the entire Catholic fraternity especially that of Ghana.

“Well, the Pope has expressed his opinion. The Catholic Church has not taken a definitive decision on that. Let me give you an example. The Methodist Church in the UK has Said That They Are Going to Allow for Gay Marriages and all. The Methodist Church of Ghana has dissociated itself from that decision. We are not under that and are not going to be bound by that,” he sharply rebuked.

The BBC interviewer quickly went ahead to quote from scriptures saying, “So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them.”

“If he created man and woman into their own image, then he created homosexuals, bisexuals and transgender people.

Again, Sam George reproached and centred the interviewer on the right track.

“My bill is not a religious bill, it is a bill on ultra-values. But if you want to go into the bible, I’ll grant you that.

“Bible says God created Adam and Eve and not Adam and Steve. He says for this reason a man shall leave his mother and father and cling to his wife. And not to another man. And so if you want to read the bible don’t read just one part of it.

“We can read the bible and go explicitly. The same bible says that God destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah because of homosexuality so when you want to quote the bible to support homosexuality, let’s be very clear.”

Claire McDonald was then quick to tell the Honourable Member of Parliament that the questions were just to test his arguments.
