Liverpool have accomplished their mission of seeing Steve Bruce’s Newcastle United off in the fifth fixture of the English Premier League game on Saturday.

The win after the International break extended Liverpool's lead over Manchester City by five points. The Citizens will kick off late against Norwich at Carrow Road.

Jurgen Klopp opted for Chamberlain and Origi against Newcastle United at Anfield. The former Arsenal player made his first Premier League start at Anfield since the 3-0 win over Bournemouth in April 2018. Roberto Firmino and Captain Jordan Henderson were dropped after international duties with Brazil and England respectively.

Former Liverpool midfielder Jonjo Shelvey replaced injured Sean Longstaff in the Newcastle side.

Newcastle United started the game on a high note when Williems opened the scores in the 7-minute. Atsu with time and space drove the ball down before locating Williems.

The Dutchman caught inside Alexander-Arnold behind the penalty box. He swiftly positioned the ball unto his left foot before squashing it past Adrian to the right top corner of the net.

The Reds begun dictating play for the Magpies with their intensive pressing. They took the game to the visitors and contained them in their half. Origi nearly gave Liverpool the equalizer in the 24-minute. Lascellas got an important touch on the ball to take it away from the Belgian. However, the danger loomed as Mane picked up the loose ball  and again spotted Origi  but his header went wide off the post.

Few minutes after Matip was denied a penalty through Lascellas pull, Mane levelled the scores for the home side. The pressure bred by the Reds was too hot for Steve Bruce men to contain. Robertson on the left squared the ball to Mane in the penalty area. The Senegalese opened up his body before curling the ball beyond Dubravka and into the top corner.

Mane doubled the lead five minutes before the frst half. A combination of Matip and Firmino won the ball high up the pitch in a Newcastle attack. The Brazilian slided the ball through the run of Mane. Dubravska rushed off his line for the ball but a struck of luck led to a rebound off the Senegalese and over the goalkeeper. Mane tapped in for his second of the afternoon.

Newcastle resumed the second half with long balls towards Joelinton upfront but Van Dijk and Matip’s combination was always a shield against the Newcastle forward. Wijnaldum almost made it three for Liverpool. The Dutchman took a touch of the ball before volleying it towards the far corner, luckily for the Magpies, the ball flashed inches over the goalkeeper.

Mohamed Salah gave Liverpool the third goal in the 72-minute. Firmino’s incredible back heel flick connected the Egyptian to burst into the penalty box. He atook out a Newcastle defender on the left side in the box and sliced the ball past Dubravka into the lower right corner.

His strike increased the number of goals involved at Anfield to 50, scoring 36 and assisting 14.

The game ended in favor of the Reds who have now scored 100 goals against Newcastle in the Premier League; the third team to score 100+ against a single opponent in the competition, and first to do so against a side who hasn’t been ever-present
