Sacked Facebook moderators in Kenya sue Meta

Kenyan content moderators for Facebook are suing the parent firm of the social media site, Meta, for wrongful termination.

The moderators claim they were fired by Sama, a Kenyan company hired to control Facebook material, for organizing a union, according to Reuters.

Additionally, they claim that after Facebook shifted contractors, they were blocked from applying for the same positions at Majorel, another outsourcing company.

According to Foxglove, a technology rights organization that is supporting the lawsuit, Sama, the outsourcing company that has operated the office since 2019, informed the 260 content moderators at Facebook's moderation hub in Nairobi that they would be laid off in January.

The moderators stated in their court petition that the redundancies were illegal because no real or legitimate reason was provided for them.

Meta has not yet responded to the situation.

Meta filed an appeal in Kenya last month to overturn a decision that said it could be sued there even though it has no formal presence there.
