After the president named Justice Mandisa Maya as the next deputy chief justice, South Africa's judiciary has solicited public comment on her eligibility.

Maya is the first African-American woman to be nominated for the role.

The Judicial Service Commission stated in a statement that the judge has accepted President Cyril Ramaphosa's nomination.

After becoming the first black woman to join the appeals court in 2005, Justice Maya has served as its president since 2017.

She was previously considered for the office of Chief Justice.

Justice Raymond Zondo, who was chosen by the president in March, was named to the position.
