Review Disability Act to conform with international conventions - GFD to Gov't
Disability Act

The Ghana Federation of Disability organization (GFD) is urging the government to step up efforts to review the disability Act, 715 which was passed in 2006 to conform with the UN convention of rights of persons with disability.

Ghana in 2006, passed the Disability Act, (Act 715), to provide for the rights of disabled persons in accordance with Article 29 of the 1992 constitution.

This is to establish a National Council on Disabled persons to attend to the interests of disabled persons and to provide for other related matters.

According to the Program Assisting Officer at the Ghana Federation of Disability organization (GFD) Adam Abdul Wahab, the government ratified the UN convention of rights of persons with disability whilst the Disability Act was already passed in the country in 2006 hence the need to review the Act to conform with the UN convention of persons with disability to empower them for full social protection.

Mr Adam Wahab believes the government’s delay is derailing efforts to demand the rights of disabled persons to enable them to participate fully as members of mainstream society.

Speaking at a workshop in Sunyani the Bono Regional capital to train persons with disability on their sexual reproductive health and rights, he stated that the current disability Act is crippled with challenges, adding that the Act was inconsistent with some provisions of the UN convention.

He however appealed to the government to step up its efforts to ensure that the Act is reviewed to enable the disability Act to be in accordance with the UN convention of rights of persons with disability.
