Liverpool will be without Thiago Alcantara, Joel Matip and Naby Keita as they welcome FC Midtjylland in their Champions League second fixture at Anfield, the club confirmed.

The trio missed the Reds first game at the Johan Cryuff Arena when they beat Ajax by a goal to nil and with the absence of Virgil van Dijk on for a long term.

Fabinho, who is progressively adapting to the centre back role with Joe Gomez will be relied upon as the six-time winners of the competition face the Danish side who are making their first appearance in the Champions League at fortress Anfield.

Jurgen Klopp during Monday’s pre-match revealed the game has arrived early to involve the trio and also reminded on the absence of Van Dijk and his consistency before the injury.

“Every team in the world would miss Virgil van Dijk,” said Klopp at his pre-match press conference.

“He is the best in the world. You play a game, he gets injured, and you play three days later so of course, that’s difficult to do because all the boys played together with him and we didn’t have long for them to get used to playing without him.

“Fabinho, who normally plays as a six, has had to come in and play with Joe (Gomez). For that, we did pretty well and that will get better 100 per cent because unfortunately everything in life takes time and defending takes time.

“They all played with Virgil at some point but not many times did they play together with each other so we do not expect perfection – but not too far away from perfection.

“Everyone needs time to replace a massive person or player, Virgil is the best defender in the world and so far we’ve done pretty well.”

The Reds were boosted by the arrival of goalkeeper Alisson Becker against Sheffield United on Saturday night. When asked whether the Brazilian will be available to play, he said, "Nothing that puts limits on my way to play – I'm really 100 per cent fit to play and I'm comfortable with that."
