Liverpool have been hit by a blow after making two signings in the January transfer window.

The Reds completed deals for Ben Davies from Preston North End and Ozan Kabak of Schalke on a six-month loan deal with an option to buy.

Davies signed for a fee in the region of £500,000, plus structured add-ons as Kabak of Schalke joined on loan for £1m with an £18m option to buy.

Sepp van den Berg, on the other hand, joined Preston North End for a season loan after a deal was agreed on deadline day.

Meanwhile, Liverpool’s centre back, Joel Matip has been ruled out for the rest of the season after sustaining an ankle ligament damage against Spurs in the Reds 3-1 win in London last Thursday.

The Cameroonian was in a challenge with Son Heung-Min during the first half before been subbed for Nathaniel Phillips at the start of the second half.

“Unfortunately, we found out now after everybody looked at it that Joel will be out for the rest of the season,” Klopp told Liverpoolfc.com.

“But he will be ready for the start of the next pre-season and finally everything will be sorted.

“It was really unlucky because it was a brilliant challenge he made actually, he saved our life in that moment in the Tottenham game when he won the challenge against Son.

“But he injured his ankle and played the game on and now is out for the season, so you can imagine how much he tried to stay on the pitch and tried to help us.

“We will wait for him. He has now the rest of this season, then the summer, then the pre-season to get ready again and he will be ready again.”

Matip’s injury adds to the Reds long list of players who are recovering especially in the defensive department yet the news of two key signings is a boost for Klopp.

Takumi Minamino will spend the rest of the season on loan at Saint Marys having played 31 games and scored four goals since arriving at Anfield from Red Bull Salzburg last January.

Liverpool takes on Brighton & Hove Albion at Anfield on Wednesday as they seek to defend their Premier League league trophy.
