Carlo Ancelotti’s new role with Real Madrid has been revealed as an ‘unexpected opportunity.

The Italian left Everton to replace Zinedine Zidane following the Frenchman’s departure from the club at the end of the season.

Ancelotti was busily planning ahead of next season after Everton’s sudden dip in form to occupy 10th on the Premier League table when rumours broke of Los Blancos interest.

According to him, the Real Madrid job was an opportunity he couldn’t turn down regardless of how he enjoyed his spell at Goodison Park.

“I would like to thank the Board of Directors, the players, and the Evertonians for the tremendous support they have all given me during my time at the Club," said Ancelotti in a statement published on Everton's official website.

"I have complete respect for everyone associated with Everton and hope they can achieve the exciting opportunities they have in front of them.

"While I have enjoyed being at Everton, I have been presented with an unexpected opportunity which I believe is the right move for me and my family at this time."

Ancelotti was appointed as the manager of Everton on a four-and-a-half-year deal in December 2019 after been axed by Napoli.

"The ceremonial signing of the contract will take place tomorrow with club president Florentino Pérez at Real Madrid City, after which Ancelotti will address the media from 6 pm (CET) in an online press conference," the club revealed in a statement.
