A section of Ghanaians have criticized and slated the government’s decision to remunerate spouses of the Ghanaian President and His Vice.

The citizens have welcomed the news as ill-timed and inappropriate especially in such a period where the living conditions of Ghanaians keeps worsening day in and out, with lots of social amenities calling for a facelift to better lives.

Samira Bawumia, Ghana's Second lady

The Government of Ghana adopted a recommendation by an emolument committee which was approved by the seventh parliament endorsing the need for the spouses of the president and vice president spouses to be paid salaries, migrating from the usual allowances.

Traders at the new Kejetia Market says the conclusion of the matter by Ghana’s parliament was unplanned, unpatriotic and a loot and share of the country’s finances by the Nana Akufo Addo’s government. They have denounced their hope in the New Patriotic Party and have cautioned that if such unsettled matters continue to receive backing by parliament, NPP must forget about 2024.

“For the love of the nation, they must support their husbands to do well in governance,” a trader told Soireenews reporter, Isaac Owusu.

“I don’t see anything wrong with paying them but since they were earlier receiving allowances, they must not be officially revealed as receivers of salaries.

The traders were irritated on hearing that 60 per cent of the loan facility has been tabled before Parliament for the procurement of vehicles for Members of Parliament and members of the Council of State. To them, it demonstrates no devotion from the MPs especially when their constituencies are in ruins and workers wanting lesser capitals to start life-transforming trade.

“What is the use of loans for MPs cars? Traders are suffering and we need loans to expand our business. If the government cannot do all this, what is the need to be procuring cars through loans? It is unacceptable and the government should be merciful towards us traders. We are suffering.”

Another trader identified the Akufo Addo’s government as conceited instead of the “listening government” attached to its administration. She spoke that the support of the President and the vice spouse has never gone unnoticed therefore why is it very necessary for them to be put on payroll instead of their allowance.

“The president’s wife benefit from the salaries and they as well receive allowances. Certain important matters must be addressed in Ghana instead of wasting all these monies. What is wrong with us?. Can't the government see all the suffering we are going through including deplorable roads and bad conditions of living and resolve them? This can't be possible,” she cried.

A lamenting male at the Kejetia market revealed frustration and expressed disappointment in the incumbent government. He said “a lot of workers helping to empower the economy Of Ghana including farmers and teachers have been neglected and we wake up to hear such a bizarre news of financial raiding? God forbid,” he cried.

“The annoying side is the car for the MPs. Go to Asuofua and see for yourself, how residents are been affected by flood whenever it rains. What is going on in this country? If they accept the loan facility for the MPs cars, I swear, we will fight the government.

"We trusted Nana Akufo Addo with all humility but his decisions are very disappointing in such a time. If he wants the NPP to keep reigning and break the eight, these decisions won’t help the party. He should remember his promises and do as expected as a leader.”
