Some 580 adolescent girls in Volta Region have been trained on how to use household materials to produce reusable sanitary pads.

Many adolescent girls have dropped out of school over stigmatization during their menstruation period, especially in rural areas of Ghana.

As part of efforts to eradicate the problem, a non-profit organization, Pencils of Promise (PoP) operating in Volta and Eastern Regions of the country has organized training for pupils in rural Volta.

The programmes manager of PoP, Raphael Bandim noted that, since the re-opening of schools, over “2,320 re-usable pads” have been distributed to some adolescent girls in some 29 deprived schools in the Volta region.

Speaking on education and awareness creation, Mr. Bandim said the organization is “trying its best” to demystify all odds against adolescent girls in their menstruation period.

Mr. Bandim is hopeful that, this will go a long way to keep the girl child in school during this period.

He urged teachers not to discriminate during this time of period but the girl child should be urged and advised on what to do in order to achieve her future dream.

He urged society to desist from stigmatizing the girl child who is in her menstruation period because “menstruation is a normal cycle that every girl, every woman goes through and there’s nothing mysterious about menstruation”. He said at Adaklu-Kpetove after training some pupils on how to make the pad on Monday, 29 March.

Other beneficiary districts in the region are; Ho, Hohoe, Kpando, Agortime-Ziope, Adaklu, North and South Dayi among the rest.
