Police officers killed in Sierra Leone unrest - minister

The country of Sierra Leone was beset by widespread protests on Wednesday, and the country's information minister, Mohamed Rahman Swaray, stated that security forces "had lost" their lives.

Parts of the city, Freetown, as well as other cities regarded as strongholds of the opposition, have seen demonstrations.

They are protesting the high expense of life, corruption, and brutality of the police. Some people are also urging the president to resign.

About President Julius Maada Bio of Sierra Leone, crowds in the city of Makeni have been captured on camera screaming, "We want peace, Maada must go."

You can now clearly see the army, Mr. Swaray remarked, confirming that it had been sent in to try to put an end to protests that, in his opinion, had not been authorized by the police.

Mr. Swaray charged that "self-seeking politicians" were behind the violent protests by taking advantage of teenage "joblessness."

According to the World Bank, Sierra Leone's youth employment rate increased to 10.77% in 2021.

The minister claimed that police stations had been set on fire in several regions of the nation.

He declared, "Our government strongly rejects this."
