Police in the Northern Region has arrested forty-four (44) suspects at the Buglana palace for failing to comply with the Police directive not to perform the funeral of the late chief. 

They were reports on the 2nd April 2021at about 0500hrs at Buglana Palace in Tamale with sporadic gunfire. According to the police, they will continue to monitor the situation at the palace with keen interest. 

The police said  Tamale Metro Assembly in a Security Move warned elders of the Palace not to start a week-long funeral rite of late Buglana Alhassan Abdul Rahman since it would attract large gatherings and occasion a breach of the peace in an already dispute over the performance of the funeral.

 According to police, the Palace went ahead with the rites in defiance that brought about agitation by a disgruntled section of the youth who hinted of a resort to using violence including armed combat to oppose the occasion. 

Police said about 1000hrs of the same date, the Regional Police Commander COP Mr Timothy Bonga got wind of the volatile nature of the situation and briefed the Regional Security Council (REGSEC) in a move to end the impasse. 

According to him, a decision was taken by REGSEC for an urgent intervention to arrest persons involved at the palace.

 On the same date April 2  2021 at 1100hrs, a combined team of Police and Military personnel led by C/Supol Iddrisu Tanko raided Buglana palace and arrested 44 suspects who were leading more than 500 gatherings without regard to the safety protocols of Covid-19. 

 The police said all the accused persons were arraigned before District court and their charges and facts were read to them. 

The police also said seven of the accused persons were granted court bail due to their ages and the remaining 37 were remanded into Police custody for them to appear on 8/4/21.
