A heavy fire has swept part of the Sokoban Wood Village upsetting 11 shops with machines and woods worth millions of cedis in the Ashanti Region, Soireenews report.

Eyewitnesses revealed that the fire set off following a thunder strike in an electrical meter to causing such devastation on Sunday, April 18, 2021.

Soireenews visit to the site on Tuesday, April 20, 2021, saw the grounds totally ruined by the fire as shapers, jointers, band saws, routers, planers and table saws were seen blackened and abandoned.

In an interview with workers who possessed the items, they expressed wretchedness at the value of materials lost and how challenging their lives will be through recovery in such a time if the government does not intervene.

“I take loans from banks for trade. I've almost lost 70,000 cedis through this disaster and we are appealing to the government to come to our aid else our lives are finished,” one said.

Another told that he lost 150 pieces of chop box and his machines in the fire. He lamented that the items valued at 7000 cedis were booked and paid by customers and losing them in the fire will heavily upset his relationship with them if he does not refund.

They appealed to government to come to their aid by renovating the place for them to start working with available materials to salvage from the loss.
