Peptic Ulcer disease on  the rise in Jaman North - Nurse Reveals
A Nurse at the Sampa Government Hospital in the Jaman North District of the Bono Region,  Madam Abigail Soboe, has disclosed that Peptic Ulcer Disease (PUD), a condition in which painful sores or ulcers develop in the lining of the stomach or the first part of the small intestine (the duodenum) is on the rise in the district.
Speaking in an interview with Gye Nyame Fm on a programme dubbed You and Your Health' Madam Abigail Soboe indicated that a thick layer of mucus protects the stomach lining from the effect of its digestive juices.
"But many things can reduce this protective layer, allowing stomach acid to damage the tissue, causing Peptic Ulcer Disease indicating that many cases of peptic ulcer disease developed because of microorganisms and bacteria," he noted.
Madam Abigail Soboe added that many cases of peptic ulcer disease develop because a bacterial infection eats away the protective lining of the digestive system.
"Also people who frequently take pain relievers are more likely to develop the infection denoting that, Pain relievers as a cause of peptic ulcer disease is the use of Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug  NSAIDs, a group of medications used to relieve pain. NSAIDs can wear away at the mucus layer in the digestive tract," he noted.
These medications, according to her, have the potential to cause peptic ulcers to form.
She advised the general public to desist from the constant intake of USAIDs (Pain relief drugs) and smoking.
She added that people must visit the hospital for medical check-ups rather than practicing self-medication because it has serious side effects on one's health.
