The Northern Region Public Relations Officer of Ghana Prisons Service, DSP David Afatsawu has sent a word of advice to all parents to keep an eye on their wards so they do not engage themselves in any illegality during this festive occasion.

Speaking in an exclusive interview with Soiree news, he noted that about 80 per cent of Tamale Central Prison inmates are youth, indicating that more of the country's productive force is being lost to various crimes. According to him, a lot of the youth unfortunately do not get good parenting to shape their lives for the better.

He also took the opportunity to express the institution's thankfulness to all persons and organizations that have offered immense support to the inmates, as well as the institution.

“As we approach the yuletide on behalf of the director-general of prisons and the regional commander, I want to use this opportunity to thank all our stakeholders who have helped in diverse ways in contributing to the welfare and wellbeing of the image in our custody,” he said.

“I also want to extend this advice to our parents to take care of their wards, children around this time. Criminal Activities takes place. Currently, if you come to our prison you’ll see about 80 per cent of the prison population being the youth who are the productive force of this nation, this signifies that we are failing in our pastoral care as parents.

“Covid 19 has given the children opportunity to stay at home. Let’s use this opportunity to educate them and establish that parental relationship so that they will not find themselves behind prison walls.”

DSP Afatsawu, however, hinted that that institution was aware of the illegality some visitors engage in, including trafficking narcotics, weapons, and other unallowed items to the inmates.

He, therefore, cautioned that security and surveillance have been intensified and that any visitor caught in this act would be apprehended and made to face the full rigours of the law.
