Nollywood actor, Fredrick Leonard has taken up the role of a black Jesus in a new movie entitled ‘Our Jesus Story’.

The movie, which was directed by Tchidi Chikere and produced by Ojiofor Ezeanyaeche, replicates the biblical story of Jesus from a Nigerian-African perspective.

Starring Leonard as the Afro-haired version of Jesus, the movie includes narrative twists like a Christian missionary grappling with incessant ritual killings in a bid to propagate the doctrine of Christianity.

Billed to hit the cinema on March 27, the religious thriller also features other Nollywood actors among which are Eucharia Anunuobi, Zack Orji and Sam Dede.

The movie’s recently released trailer opens with a group of armed local men pursuing an evasive evangelist, who is eventually captured, only for a monarch to declare that he must be put to death.

This scene then gives way to series of others including a bearded and Afro-haired Jesus yelling and writhing in pain as soldiers administer several strokes of the whip on his back, with his hands tied.

‘Our Jesus Story’ comes at a time when many social factions and climes have begun filming their differing interpretations of biblical accounts to encompass culture-specific values.

It would be recalled that in Brazil, a 45-minute special had caused a heated backlash, after the movie retold biblical account while featuring Christ as “gay”.

But after the creators of the controversial Christmas comedy suffered a petrol bomb attack, a court in Brazil had ordered Netflix to temporarily take down the movie from its platform.
