President John Dramani Mahama has reaffirmed the purpose of the Operation Recover All Loot (ORAL) initiative, emphasizing its role in combating corruption and promoting accountability in public office, rather than targeting individuals unfairly.
Addressing members of the Ghana Bar Association, Mahama highlighted ORAL's significance as a platform for whistleblowers to report corruption, backed by rigorous investigative procedures.
Mahama acknowledged that corruption has become a pervasive issue, with many individuals misappropriating public funds.
He noted that corruption was a top concern for Ghanaians during the last campaign, underscoring the need for the government to take decisive action. The ORAL initiative, he explained, provides a direct platform for whistleblowers, with a hotline receiving over 2,000 calls. While some allegations were unfounded, others were substantial and were referred to the Attorney General for further investigation.
Mahama stressed that ORAL is not a tool for political persecution, but rather a vital mechanism in the fight against corruption.
"One of the issues we are confronted with is the issue of corruption and accountability in office. It's become the norm for people to dip their hands into the public purse or misappropriate funds," he stated. Mahama further clarified, "So I just wanted to clarify that it's not an instrument for witch-hunting anybody. It's an instrument for assisting in the fight against corruption."
Mahama's remarks underscore the NDC's commitment to tackling corruption and promoting transparency in governance. reaffirming ORAL's purpose, Mahama aims to reassure the public that the initiative is a genuine effort to combat corruption, rather than a means of targeting individuals unfairly.
