The Director-General of the National Road Safety Authority, Ing. Mrs May Obiri-Yeboah has urged drivers to drive within the required speed limit to help reduce road accidents in the country.

She made the observation in an interview with Ark news monitored by Soiree News during her monitoring tour in the Bono region. According to her over speeding has contributed hugely to road accidents hence the call.

Touching on the theme of the UN Global Road Safety Week celebration; Streets for Life #Love30 Mrs Obiri-Yeboah indicated that there was the need to drive 30 km/hr in town and 90 km/hr on highways to help save lives.

UN Global Road Safety Week (UNGRSW) is a biennial global road safety campaign hosted by World Health Organization. It brings together individuals, governments, NGOs, corporations, and other organizations from around the world to raise awareness of road safety and make changes that will reduce the number of road deaths.

It is a valuable opportunity for NGOs and other civil society organizations and individuals to mobilize under the banner of a global campaign, giving them a global identity and mandate for their campaigns – together we have a stronger voice.

The UN Global Road Safety Week held since 2007 is the occasion to garner policy commitments at national and local levels to deliver 30 km/h (20 mph) speed limits in urban areas; generate local support for such low-speed measures in order to create safe, healthy, green and livable cities; and highlight the links between 30 km/h speed limits and attainment of a number of Sustainable Development Goals, including those on health, education, infrastructure, sustainable cities, climate action and partnerships.

She however called on motor and tricycle riders to strictly comply with road traffic regulations and desist from loading passengers rather than goods.

She added that the authority will soon be on the road to inspect drivers and check their activities of which appropriate sanctions will be issued.
