The Northern Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) hails from Dagbon as his maternal home, revealed by Mr Yussif Toyibu, the Regional Treasurer of NPP in the Northern region.

"The governing New Patriotic Party Chairman, Mohammed Bantima Samba's biological mother hails from an indigenous community in Dagbon called Bagurigu and by extension, he is a Dagomba.

"Chairman Samba, therefore, qualifies to partake in Traditional activities of Dagbon and can also contest any elections in the Northern Region," he asserted.

Mr Toyibu made these revelations when he was speaking on Radio Tamale’s evening political talkshow, Yel Vuhi Dundongni on Thursday, June 17, 2021, monitored by Abdul Sammed Gurundari of Soireenew.

“Chairman Samba is half-Dagomba, half-Manpuriga," he said.

"Bagurigu is his maternal home. His mother is a real Dagomba woman. The current chief of Bagurigu is chairman Samba’s maternal uncle. The chief is a younger brother to chairman Samba’s mother,” he added disclosed.

Many have quizzed why chairman Samba is from Mamprugu and decided not to contest the NPP chairmanship race in the North-East region but rather want to hold onto the Northern regional chairmanship slot in the party’s coming elections.

“Those who say if you are a Manpuriga you should not contest elections in Northern Region have no case. That is the limit of their thinking. Those who are interested in the position should be telling the people what they come to do if elected. Nobody can handle the region the way he is doing. I don’t see the difference between Manpurili and Dagbani. Are we not descendants of Naa-Gbewa?” he asked.

There have been calls from a section of the NPP support base in the region on the regional chairman to move to Manpurigu-dominated Region, Northeast since the creation of the new regions in December 2018. The referendum led to the split of the Northern Region into three (3) regions, Northern, Northeast, and Savannah regions.

The then Northern Regional executives of the two (2) major political parties, NPP and NDC whose tribes fell in either Northeast or Savannah Region moved therein to continue in the same position he was occupying.

The current North-East Regional secretary for the NPP, lawyer Sule Sambian and Communications Director for Savannah Region, Mohammed Issah were some executives who voluntarily relocated to the new regions.

In the case of Chairman Samba, those who believe he has no business in the northern are citing example of him voting in the referendum at the AL-SALIA PRIMARY, A Polling Station in Gambaga constituency to create the North-East Region.

Chairman Samba is of the persons who have an interest in the chairmanship slot and underground campaigns are ongoing across the corners of the region.
