The District Chief Executive (DCE) for North Tongu District Assembly in the Volta Region, Mr Osborn Divine Fenu, has shown steady progress the district was making with its sustainable use of community-based environmental and natural resources to create more job and unique business opportunities and wealth for the people.

Mr Fenu, who is very passionate about human development, presented an outline of deals to strategic and potential investors at the trade and investment fair in the Ho Sports Stadium which was held on Tuesday, November 23, 2021.

He showcased vast agriculture, aquaculture, service, commerce, tourism, industry, fishing, real estate development, agri-business and investment business opportunities of the district to investors, and called on them to come and invest in these areas to bring more sustainable development to the district.

According to him, he has been currently touring the electoral areas within the district to engage with the people, to learn at first hand their pressing needs and concerns and to tell them what the government has been doing to make things better for them.

Mr Fenu made this known while addressing participants at the trade and investment fair held recently in the region.

He said the district abounds in natural resources such as vast arable land for rice production and more, has the potential of becoming one of the productive and vibrant districts in the region and Ghana as a whole with the necessary measures put in place to harness its full potential. 

He briefed the gathering about major investment areas in the district, saying that the natural resource base and potentials in the district provide a variety of production systems and economic activities.

He indicated that the district is mainly an agrarian economy, with the majority of the population engaged in crop farming, livestock keeping, fishing and other related trading activities. 

According to him, the practice of agriculture in the district is predominantly done at the subsistence level which employs about 65 per cent of the entire labour force. 

"The district is well known in the region for the production of rice, cassava and maize. Other major trees and food crops produced in the district are mangoes, cashew, rice, sweet potatoes, yam, cassava, cowpea, groundnut and vegetables (including garden eggs, pepper, okra and watermelon). 

"Maize and cassava are the main staple foods and therefore, grown by the majority of farmers across the district. The livestock sector plays an important role in the lives of the people as the district is endowed with a large livestock population of cattle, sheep, goats, poultry and others. About 30 per cent of agricultural land available in the district is used by livestock farmers as pasture for animals," he said.

He mentioned that the areas of agricultural investment in the district are Prairie Volta Rice, Rice in Aveyime, Musahamat Farm, Banana in Aveyime, Vergpro Maize Torgorme-Fodzoku, Anyako Farm, Pepper Fodzoku Torgorme, Fresh field Pepper Yaeweh, Quist Farm, Mushroom in Aveyime Market.

He said the major foodstuffs that are normally found in the market include: tomatoes, okra, plantain, cassava, among others and called on the investors to take this opportunity to market their businesses in the district.

During the annual festivals in the district, he said, Agbadza, Atokoe, Awuna and Gadzo traditional dance forms exist in the district, which visitors (or tourists) could be treated to.
