The Executive Director for Northern Patriots in Research and Advocacy (NORPRA), Bismarck Adongo Ayorogo has cast doubts about the timelines given by President Nana Addo on the completion of the Pwalugu Multipurpose Dam.

President Akufo-Addo in his state of the nation address on Tuesday 9 March 2021 stated that the Pwalugu Multi-Purpose Dam project will be completed by the first half of this year, with actual construction commencing in the second half of this year. And commissioning is expected in 2025.

But Mr. Bismarck Adongo said no significant construction work has been carried out at the Pwalugu Multipurpose Dam site hence the time frame for its completion given by the President may not be met following the slow pace of work at the site.

He indicated that checks made show that consultations with community members and the relocation of affected settlers are not done yet therefore the project will delay.

The Multipurpose Pwalugu Dam project

The construction of the Multipurpose Pwalugu Dam project is aimed at mitigating the regular floods that occur in the White Volta basin, covering parts of the Upper East and North East Regions.

Once completed, it will add sixty megawatts (60MW) of hydropower and fifty megawatts (50MW) of solar power to the national grid, thereby improving the quality of power supply in the northern part of Ghana.
