The Presby Basic School in Nkurakan, a farming community, in the Yilo Krobo Municipality in the Eastern Region of Ghana has turned to be a deathtrap school building facility posing danger to both teachers and the pupils as well.

The school which serves the entire Nkurakan community and neighbouring farming communities is left to rot without any maintenance and care by the municipal authorities over the years.

The PTA chairman of the school, Mr Tetteh Wayo who spoke to the media opined, that the pupils’ lives are in danger; they study under deplorable structures during a rainy season which could easily collapse and end their lives.

The Assembly Member Thomas Afridi, on his part, said he fears for the safety of the children,  especially whenever there is a climatic change.

According to him, “the building has developed many cracks, which can be easily be broken down by any mere rain”, adding that the roofing can no longer hold water because almost all the iron sheets have hundreds of rusting holes and books are destroyed whenever it rains.

The headmaster of the school narrated, that though she reported the case to the Assembly Member and PTA chairman, for the area, the school is yet to receive any feedback or help.

They, therefore, appealed to non-governmental organisations and other stakeholders as well as philanthropists to help and salvage the situation.
