Nigeria's Tobi Amusan sets hurdles world record

At the World Athletics Championships in the United States, Tobi Amusan of Nigeria took home gold in the women's 100-meter hurdles.

With a time of 12.12 seconds, the 25-year-old shattered the world record during the semifinals. She surpasses the previous record of 12.20 seconds set in 2016 by American Kendra Harrison, who came in second place to Amusan.

Two hours later, Amusan won the gold in the final.

She run even faster in the final (12.06s), but due to too much favorable wind (+2.5 and the maximum legal is +2.0), this will not be registered as a record.

Tears of joy flowed down her face as the Nigerian anthem resounded in the Hayward Field stadium, Eugene, Oregon, for surely the greatest and proudest night in these championships for Nigeria.

What a night it was for Nigeria, who waited until the last possible moment to add their names on the medals board.

Nigerian long jumper Ese Brume briefly led the field with a jump of 7.02 meters on Sunday night, but German Malaika Mihambo (who has Tanzanian ancestry) outperformed her on her fourth jump attempt (7.09 meters) and even further on her penultimate tries (7.12m).

Second place went to Ese Brume. These were the two medals that Nigeria took home from these competitions.
