The seasoned activist of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mr Ibrahim Hardi Landlord, taken a swipe at President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo for failing to devise effective measures to
to help curb illegal small scale mining activities, popularly known as galamsey, leading to more environmental degradation and social issues in the country.
According to NDC activist, who doubles as columnist the illegal small scale mining activities have been escalated in the country because President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo led New Patriotic Party (NPP) government's regulatory framework was inadequate.
He observed that indeed, galamsey (illegal mining) has been a long-standing issue in Ghana, predating President Nana Addo's administration.
However, the problem escalated under his leadership
Historical point:
Galamsey has been a persistent challenge since the 1980s, with various governments tackling it with varying degrees of success.
Escalation under President Nana Addo:
1. Increased artisanal mining: Artisanal mining expanded significantly, leading to more environmental degradation and social issues.
2. Lax regulations: The government's regulatory framework was inadequate, enabling galamsey operations to flourish.
3. Corruption allegations: Some accuse government officials and associates of complicity in galamsey activities.
Government's response:
1. Operation Vanguard (2017): A military-led taskforce aimed to combat galamsey.
2. Mining reforms (2019): New regulations and policies aimed to regularize small-scale mining.
3. Inter-Ministerial Committee (2020): Established to coordinate anti-galamsey efforts.
Above all failed as the result of the npp government under president Nana Addo keen interest in it.
Challenges persist:
1. Environmental damage: Galamsey continues to harm water bodies, forests, and farmlands.
2. Health risks: Mercury and other toxins pose health hazards to nearby communities.
3. Economic losses: Illicit mining deprives Ghana of significant revenue.
Way forward for npp government:
1. Strengthen regulations and enforcement.
2. Enhance transparency and accountability.
3. Support sustainable, responsible mining practices.
4. Address poverty and unemployment driving artisanal mining.
The debate surrounding galamsey under President Nana Addo highlights the complexity of the issue.
The government interest in galamsey supercede the good health of the citizens, walking Ghanaians to kick NPP government out in political power.
