Nana Agradaa Saga: Government Begins CrackDown On ‘Ritualists’

In what has been the answer to widespread calls by Ghanaians concerning the recent rise in ritual killings, government officials have arrested Nana Agradaa while also shutting down her two television stations Thunder TV and Ice 1 TV.

This move can be described as an effort on the government's part to filter the information that goes down to the youths through television stations after the Kasoa ritual murder of a ten-year-old boy.

Chairman of the National Film Authority, Socrate Sarfo, had earlier pledged to eradicate all 'unclassified' audiovisual content shown on television stations, cinema theatre, or movie screenings as early as possible.

The arrest and shutdown have become a stark victim of this claim as the two stations were closed because they had no licenses; their licenses had been revoked by the National Communications Authority back in March 2020.

Socrate Sarfo gave made the rule after he agreed to the role Tv stations played in the most recent ritual killing incident.

He noted that things people see on television have a strong influence on what they do in real life and since there are no controls on Ghanaian media anything can happen now.

“Anyone who says our TV content is responsible for the Kasoa killing is right. There are no controls on what is broadcast on television and anyone can put out any content on a TV without looking at its effects on society”.

While speaking in an interview on the Epa Hoa Daben political talk show hosted by Happy98.9FM’s Don Kwabena Prah he admitted that the kids involved in the killing got their experience from movies they saw.

“One of the kids narrating how they murdered the victim said he struck the victim with a log and this can be attributed to what they’ve seen on television”.

“I will agree with anyone blaming the media for what happened in Kasoa”,

There will now be stiff restrictions as well as closures for stations or individuals who peddle "spiritualism" on Tv without checking the impact their videos have on the youths.
