According to local media, everyone is from a 22-person household in Kayova village, which is located in the northeastern Kavango region.

According to reports, the majority of people who passed away were children who were in urgent need of nourishment.

According to the health ministry, which was quoted by the state broadcaster NBC, the family had ingested pearl millet-flour porridge and pounded fermented residue from a homemade beverage.

A team of employees from the ministry has been dispatched to the grieving family to offer psycho-social support and counseling.

According to reports, South Africa has received samples of the porridge to test for food poisoning.
