Motorbike collision kills two

Two persons are reported died after motorbikes collided head-on in Lepusi, a community in the Nanumba North Municipality of the Northern Region.

The Chief Executive of the Nanumba North Municipal Assembly, Abdulai Yaqou, confirmed the incident and said the two were riding in opposite directions when the accident occurred. He said the two riders were confirmed dead on arrival at the Bimbilla Municipal Hospital. “The two riders collided head-on, and unfortunately, they both died at the Bimbilla Municipal hospital. As I speak, they have both lost their lives. It is most unfortunate because I do not know how it happened that they both collided head-on,” Mr Yaqou said. Meanwhile, their bodies have been sent to the Bimbilla hospital morgue for preservation. This comes a few days after a police dispatch rider was crushed to death at Pokuase in the Greater Accra Region. The deceased officer was said to be pursuing a vehicle on his motorbike from Ofankor when the unfortunate accident occurred. Upon reaching Pokuase, the driver reportedly slowed for the officer to approach and then suddenly hit him, causing him to fall under a moving truck which crushed him to death. The motorbike of the police officer was badly mangled while his helmet was also crushed by the truck, which caused him head injury leading to his death. Statistics reveal a worrying trend with motorcyclists and their pillion riders. They are more exposed to road traffic deaths than other road user groups. According to data from the National Road Safety Authority (NRSA), although the proportion of motorcycles involved in crashes reduced by 11.9 per cent from 6,166 in 2021 to 5,432 in 2022, most of the fatalities on the road involved motorcyclists. NRSA revealed that 41 per cent of the 2,373 deaths through road fatalities in 2022 involved motorcycles.
