A bridge that links Wassa Afransie and adjourning communities has collapsed as motor rider loses life in an attempt to cross it.

The bridge on river Mamie links Wassa Akropong to communities such as Wassa Afransie, Jukwaa, Abrokyire Krobo among others in the Wassa Amenfi East District in the Western Region.

The unfortunate accident occured on Sunday morning when the Tipper truck heavily loaded with materials meant for the construction of a cocoa road project in the area was crossing the Mamie river.

An “okada” rider who was behind the tipper truck with two passengers who wanted to overtake the truck as the bridge collapsed got trapped under the bridge when the over 40-year-old bridge, constructed collapsed.

George Appiah 42, Emmanuel Dovi 32, and Collins Kuma are popularly known as Aloo 30, where the victims suffered various degrees of injuries and were rescued after about twenty minutes under the bridge.

The victims were rushed to the Wassa Akropong Government Hospital for treatment but due to the severe condition Collins Kuma’s found himself, he was transferred to the Tarkwa Government Hospital but he was pronounced dead upon arrival upon reaching the hospital.

Mr. Boahen Aidoo, CEO of Cocobod who paid a visit to the accident scene said the contractor on the road will create an alternative bridge to facilitate the movement of the road users.

He lamented bitterly that galamsey activities will hamper the creation of an alternative bridge because the illegal miners had left huge pits uncovered along the river banks.

Nevertheless, Mr. Boahen Aidoo gave the assurance that the alternative bridge will be created to ensure free flow movement.

Meanwhile, the Wassa Amenfi East Municipal Chief Executive, Madam Helena Appiah has visited the home of the bereaved family to commiserate with them.

She said, the contractor will fix the alternative Bridge very soon to bring back life to the road, so the citizens should do their best to support the contractor to deliver a good job.

 Member of Parliament for Wassa Amenfi East Mr. Nicholas Amankwaa on the other hand commended the police, NADMO officials, and the natives for helping to rescue the victims.

He advised Okada riders and other road users to be extra careful when using the road to avert such occurrences.
