More anti-jihadist aid expected as Blinken tours Niger

On the second stop of his brief trip of African countries, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken will be in Niger on Wednesday.

He is anticipated to declare increased US assistance to Niger in its struggle against a jihadist insurgency that has driven millions of Sahelians from their homes.

China and Russia have been gaining power in Africa at the expense of the United States.

One of the many US leaders who have been traveling to the continent recently is Mr. Blinken.

President Mohamed Bazoum of Nigerien received praise from his American colleague last year for establishing democracy in a nation that had previously experienced numerous military coups.
