Messi is entering the final stage of his contract at Barcelona.

The Argentine signed a four-year extension in 2017 that included a stipulation allowing him to leave the club free at the end of the season.

ESPN reported that the clause in his contract expired in May 30, meaning he's staying with Barcelona at least until the end of his contract next summer.

His feud with Barcelona’s sporting Director, Eric Abidal has led to doubts surrounding his future after 18 years with the Catalans. The 32-year old replied to Abidal’s comments, which identified a lack of internal communication between players and coach staff after the team came under criticism for underachieving under former coach, Ernesto Valverde.

Josep Bartomeu wished that the Ballon d’Or winner had extended the contract yet discussed that it is a personal decision Messi has to make if he want to stay or leave at the end.

"Surely it will be the wish of all parties, if he feels strong and ambitious, to extend this contract indefinitely," Bartomeu told reporters. "Ultimately it is he who must decide. He has earned the right to decide when he will stop playing football. But he wants to finish his playing career at Barcelona.

"Over the next two or three seasons our leader will continue to be Leo Messi. There's no doubt that he is still young, still strong. He is still ambitious."
