Lionel Messi has beaten Karim Benzema and Kylian Mbappe to lift FIFA's BEST men's player in the world award at a ceremony in France after his World Cup heroics with Argentina in 2022
Argentina captain, Lionel Messi won this year’s Best FIFA Men’s Player award at a ceremony in Paris on Monday, February 27, 2023.
Messi beat Paris Saint-Germain team-mate Kylian Mbappe and Real Madrid captain, Karim Benzema, to the prize.
The 35-year-old won the 2022 World Cup with his country in December, finally getting to lift the only major honour he hasn’t won in his career.
"The World Cup win was the best thing that happened to my career, Thanks to God who helped me to achieve it after so many years of trying.”
"It’s amazing. It was a tremendous year and it is an honour for me to be here tonight and win this award,” Messi said.
It was Messi’s second FIFA The Best title, with his first coming in 2019.
He has also won a record seven Ballon d’Or awards.
