The Afigya Kwabre South District Assembly have accounted their stewardship to Ghanaians in government’s Meet the Press initiative on Wednesday, October 30, 2019 at Kodie Methodist Church.

The District was established in 2017 by the Local Government and is one of the two hundred and sixty (260) Metropolitan, Municipal District Assemblies (MMDA’s) in Ghana and among the 43 Districts in the Ashanti Region. It was carved out from the then Kwabre East District Assembly naming Kodie as it’s District capital.

 

 

Reviewing the works of the New Patriotic Party in the Afigya Kwabre South District, the District Chief Executive, Hon. Adu Poku Christian spoke on the benefits derived through government’s flagship programmes and developmental projects since assuming office. According to him on social welfare issues, the Assembly disbursed funds in 2017-2019 to 232 persons with Disability for various ventures including economic activity, apprenticeship, medical bills and assistive device. He disclosed that some beneficiaries also received various items such as deep freezers, wheel chair, hair dryers and others to support their living.

The Livelihood Empowerment Against Poverty (LEAP) was also accounted that 325 households in 200 communities are benefitting from the programme.

 

 

Nine construction of Educational projects were documented with three completed; the manufacture of 200 Mono and 200 Dual Desk for Basic School, Construction of Teacher’s Quarters at Hemang and the construction of Modern JHS at Daboya Ankaase.

Two proposed school projects were also briefed to be ongoing by means of the Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFUND) and the District Assembly Common Fund (DACF) as 49 scholarships were revealed to have been awarded in the District. A consistent improvement in the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) results was acknowledged as an additive of a better country administration by the New Patriotic Party governance.

Hon. Adu Poku Christian brought the gathering to speed that Health and Energy projects undertaken by the government in the District have altered lives and encouraged suitable stay. Inadequate Disposal facilities of waste was revealed as one of the greatest challenges in the District.

Briefing the press on the issue, the DCE spoke that lands designated as dumping sites have been sold out to individuals for construction making it difficult for the acquisition of land for that purpose.

 

 

“Before the partition of the District, we used to dump waste on a land in the outskirt of Ahenkro. It is never allowed to keep on using a location where you are no longer part therefore, it is our duty to find a suitable site for the waste. As until now, we have no place,” he said.

He further urged tribes in possession of lands in the District to give them out for National development. According to Mr. Poku, government has lot of developmental projects to initiate yet the land-owners refusal to hand over their asset for projects thwarts the decisions of authorities.

“When Chiefs in the various communities give us lands for projects, Family members halt work and claim possession of the land. Sometimes the summon us to Manhyia for the case to be resolved. Although the King get matters resolved yet it postponements development in our Districts”

“After all every infrastructure was built on a space which belong to others yet they gave the permit. We are entreating them to put an end to such an attitude,” he added.

 

 

DSP Stephen Ofori Akrasi, Afigya Kwabre South District Police Commander appealed to government to help them with Vehicles in solving Armed Robbery Incidence in the District. He told that armed robbery is very rampant in the Assembly and the lacking number of cars and officers benefits robbers to dictate their activities.

“The robbers here are quick to bribe but I am the one person you cannot bribe. My two years in this Assembly has produced an impressive record against crime but the addition of a few officers and a vehicle will help us to minimize the criminal activity here,” he said.

The Ashanti Regional New Patriotic Party Communications Director, Mr. Akwesi Kyei spoke that whatever Nana Addo Dankwah is doing is for the betterment of the country therefore Ghanaians must rally their support behind him to make his initiatives successful.
