At least five individuals have been confirmed dead in a shooting in Louisville, Kentucky, by police.

Six other individuals, including a police officer, have been hurt and transferred to nearby hospitals.

The general public has been asked to avoid a section of East Main.

A commercial facility in the neighborhood appears to be cordoned off in video from the scene by heavily armed police.

Officers responding to the complaint met live gunfire, the Louisville Police Department reported in a brief press conference.

The gunman has now gone. What caused his death is unknown.

According to a tweet from the FBI, agents arrived to the area and are assisting the local police.

Andy Beshear, the governor of Kentucky, posted on Twitter that he was on his way to the shooting scene.

Please pray for the city of Louisville and all the affected families, he said.

Craig Greenberg, the city's mayor, also traveled to the scene shortly after the incident.

The incident took place in Louisville's downtown region, near to the baseball stadium Louisville Slugger Field and a few blocks from the Muhammad Ali Center and Kentucky International Convention Centre.

"I was at the stoplight, and the first thing that I saw - there was a guy across the street at the intersection and he was lying down at the entrance to a hotel," an eyewitness told local Fox affiliate WDRB.
