Looming  Health  Danger  In Kokrobite
Minister of Sanitation and Water  Resources
The health of residents living on the seashores of Kokrobite in the Ga South Municipality of the Greater Accra Region is in danger due to the stench emanating from the 'illegal' solid wastes dumping site in the area.
Investigations conducted by soireenews.com have revealed that some residents in Kokrobite and its adjoining communities in Ga the South have turned the seashores into a dumpster due to the failure of the Ga South Municipal Assembly and the Member of Parliament (MP) for the area, to provide residents with suitable rubbish containers.
A visit to the area by this reporter revealed that the indiscriminate dumping of rubbish is gradually affecting property owners as well as the entire residents in the area.
This reporter was told that the indiscriminate dumping of rubbish has gotten out of hand as heavy downpour washes the waste into the sea.
The soireenews.com senior reporter learned that situation is gradually affecting the health of residents as well as fisher folks as it is affecting their business.
The development has compelled residents living around the dumping site to formally inform the officials of the Assembly and the traditional authorities to close down the dumping site but the local and Assembly authorities have refused to heed their calls to shut down the site.
According to the residents, the smell emanating from the refuse dump has the potential to serve as grounds for the outbreak of cholera and other communicable diseases in the area.
Speaking in an interview with Soireenews.com, the Asaofoate for Kokrobite Nii Sowah II expressed disappointment in the Ga South Municipal Assembly for failure to address environmental sanitation issues in the area and confirmed the outbreak of cholera in the community.
He stressed that in order to prevent cholera-related deaths in the Kokrobite, the government and the Assembly must come to their rescue.
