‘Lingard is unhappy as a sub at United’ – Solskjaer reveals

Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has revealed that Jesse Lingard is not pleased with all in starting for the Red Devils from the bench.

Solskjaer added that Lingard needs more minutes because his impact in the Villarreal victory was incredible.

Villarreal’s 53rd-minute goal by Paco Alcacer made some supporters of Man United think that they were doomed to their third consecutive 1-0 defeat.

But the magnificent performance in the last hour from Lingard and Ronaldo were enough to secure a much-needed Champions League win for the men at Old Trafford.

The Red Devils were stunned by Young Boys in a shock 2-1 defeat a fortnight ago.

Solskjaer’s side were second best for large periods of the game and Villarreal will feel hard done by not to come away with anything after a good performance away from home.

The Red Devils coach has come under serious criticism for his substitutions in the past.

But Lingard, who has come off the bench for United five times already this season, repaid his boss’ trust with a vital assist.

In a post-match statement, Solskjaer said:

"Jesse is unhappy at not playing more, but you come on and make an impact. That’s what you do when you’re a sub at this level.

"That is what happens at Old Trafford. It has happened so many times before.

“We had to throw caution to the wind and we got lucky in the end."

The 28-year-old United midfielder came off the bench in the 89th minute and assisted Cristiano Ronaldo's 95th-minute winner, sparing his Solskjaer’s blushes after a run of poor results.

Solskjaer himself regularly came off the bench for Man Utd to make an impact during his playing career, most notably in the Champions League final in 1999 when he scored a dramatic stoppage-time winner.
