The Ghana Education Service (GES) will introduce a comprehensive Sexuality Education (CSE) next year in the Basic School’s Curriculum.

Ghana and the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) launched the CSE programme this year in a bid to empower adolescents and young people to deepen their scope of existing activities to attain a Comprehensive Sexuality Education (CSE).

Known as the “Our right, Our lives, Our Future,” the CSE is supported by the governments of Sweden and Ireland.

It is being implemented in Ghana, Eswatini (formerly Swaziland), Malawi, Tanzania, Zambia and Zimbabwe for effective delivery of quality comprehensive sexuality programmes.

According to the Director General of the Ghana Education Service, Prof. Kwasi Opoku Amankwa, the purpose of the guideline is to help teachers and other stakeholders (such as Community-Based Organizations) to provide appropriate training and support for young people. Specifically to help them;

  • Acquire accurate and reliable information on sexual rights and reproductive health.
  • Develop skills for self-development and decision-making, sense of self-confidence, assertiveness, ability to take responsibility, ability to ask questions and seek health and empathy.
  • Nurture positive attitudes and value including open mindedness, respect for self and others, positive self-worth esteem, comfort, non-judgmental attitude, sense of responsibility concerning their sexual and reproductive health issues.

He revealed in the guidelines for CSE curriculum that due to improved education, social media, general exposure and the chanting context in which young people are developing, there is the need to provide accurate information on Sexuality Education in Ghana.
