A Private Legal practitioner Eric Owusu Sae has charged Ghanaians to mount pressure on the President to reignite his quest for the election of MMDEC’s.

This according to the Lawyer is the surest way to ensuring development at various localities in the country.

“I am calling on all Ghanaians to put pressure on Nana Addo since he has been reelected as President for the election of MMDCE’s if he indeed wants development for the country” he charged.

The direct election of MMDCEs was a campaign promise of successful presidential candidate Nana Akufo-Addo in the 2016 general elections.

A constitutional referendum was scheduled to be held in Ghana on 17 December 2019, alongside district level elections. The proposed amendments to the constitution would have allowed for the direct election of Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) and allow political parties to be involved in local elections.

The proposed changes involved amending article 243(1), which provided for the appointment of MMDCEs by the president, and article 55(3), which banned political party activity in district-level elections.

As article 55 is an entrenched clause, the referendum required a turnout of at least 40% and over 75% of those voting to vote in favour of the proposal to be passed.

On December 1, 2019, President Akufo-Addo cancelled the referendum following some controversies that greeted the referendum.

However, the  Sunyani based private legal practitioner in an interview with Soiree News Bono Regional Correspondent, Nana Ama Asiedu says the convention which gives political parties the mandate to appoint MMDCE’s and Regional ministers after winning power must be changed.

Lawyer Owusu Sae wonders why party supporters are rewarded with such positions for their role during political campaign.

He said it is about time interesting personalities of such portfolios are made to contest and voted for after presenting to the electorates their ideologies for same.

"Ghanaians have to compel the president, Nana Akufo Addo to awaken the decision to vote and choose our MMDCEs," he said.

"They cant be appointed to take of Assemblies they have no clue of. It was a great opportunity to have them elected by the people just like how the General elections are done including Regional Ministers.

They are paid by Ghanaians so their position must be determined by us. The brightest people must come on board to help develop the welfare of people in the communities. Politicians cannot be making decisions for us regarding who should rule over us. That means we cannot blame them when they refuse to fulfil their mandates to the people."
