The MCE, Honourable Osei Assibey Bonsu revealed that the office will serve as a residence of witness through record-keeping in order to provide evidence when the need arises.

The Kwabre East Municipal in the Ashanti Region on Thursday, February 4, 2021, officially commissioned a marriage registration office at the forecourt of the Assembly at Mamponteng to legally endorse the matrimony.

According to the Municipal Chief Executive, Honorable Osei Asibey Bonsu, marriage registration is significant in our modern world due to circumstance of separation in future, obtaining a succession certificate and a few others.

He told that several disputes relating to property sharing arise when there is divorce and in order to avoid them, it is fundamental to get the marriage documented as soon as possible for legal proceedings to be easily handled.

He asserted that the office will serve as a residence of witness through record-keeping of marriage in order to provide evidence when the need arises.

“Marriage must always have witnesses. Sometimes, observers of the marriage are nowhere to found, either they are dead or have travelled. But when the institution is registered, it doesn’t matter the year, the law will define the union to determine the next course of action.

“Be it customary, wedding, Islamic, this institution will take care of it and provide couples with certificates as proof of their union."

The MCE enlightened that the office has qualified employees who can counsel couples when necessary on divorce procedures and property sharing according to the law to avoid children from suffering in the aftermath.

“Divorce must go through a process just like marriage. Certificates are given in all to witness it also and the office is established for any education on such. We also provide counselling for couples in order not to make children fall victims.

"We have an established legal committee to help in asset distribution for the couples,” he said.

Adding up to the MCE's address, the Registrar for the Kwabre East Municipal Marriage Registration Office, Madam Matilda Asamoah encouraged the people of Kwabre East and its surroundings to have their marriages legally backup.

She advised that the office is also opened for divorces as well and for that matter, everybody is welcome for any explanation concerning topics regarding the union.

“Accepting the western approach of marriage means everything binding it is welcome that is why the government has prepared binding laws to protect the union as strictly monogamous legal means.

"One has no right to engage a second wife or husband except a divorce is filed and the marriage concluded.

“The laws also guides spouses who have their marriages registered so that when one of them is no more, succession certificate can be granted,” she said.

She educated that the process of marriage registration is not tedious but requires the presence of the spouse to make it happen.

She advised the Kwabre East residents to make use of the office and legally bind their unions for the sake of unforeseen circumstances in the future.
