Kenyans told to replace staple food amid drought

Kenyans have been urged to look for alternatives to maize as the nation struggles with a shortage of the crop due to a protracted drought.

The cost of living crisis and high prices for maize flour are the main causes of the opposition demonstrations, which got underway on Monday.

The government was having trouble acquiring the grain due to a shortage on the global market, Agriculture Minister Mithika Linturi explained to legislators on Wednesday.

So, I implore Kenyans to accept rice, potatoes, and other food alternatives. We have already brought tons of rice, and we will be bringing more the following week, according to Mr. Linturi.

He was confident that after a ship carrying tons of maize and rice docks in the nation in the next 10 days, the price of maize flour will drop.

90kg of maize is currently going for 5,600 Kenyan shillings ($43; £35) per bag, but local outlets predict that price will drop considerably once the imports arrive.
