According to the government-funded Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNCHR), both police and protesters are accused of violating human rights during Monday's demonstrations.

The commission demanded in a statement that the government's police watchdog look into accounts of vandalism, arrests, injuries, and the use of live ammunition by police.

The KNCHR argued that while protecting the innocent during protests, police should be allowed to separate out and detain violent protesters who are violating the peace.

The committee further states that any abuse or violation of human rights related to these demonstrations must be quickly, thoroughly, and fairly investigated.

In several opposition strongholds, including parts of Nairobi and the west of the country, demonstrations against the high cost of living and alleged election irregularities turned violent.
